It takes 17 years to a dog to recogine himself in a mirror

This my conclusion of having seen my 17-yo dog looking strangely at himself in a mirror today, and then attacking his reflect! I had to come to the conclusion that he has arrived to a wise enough state of mind to be aware of his reflect in the mirror... this is the only explanation to me...
